Week 6 Blog: My Three Sources

Keira Knightley Bans Disney Movies for Daughter - ET Canada

This is a podcast on ET Canada. The purpose of this podcast is to spread awareness on how sexist Disney is. It talks about how the Disney princesses are very dependent and cannot be on their own. Although they focused on Little Mermaid and Cinderella, they also did briefly talked about Frozen and I believe the same arguments can be applied to Frozen as well. For instance, if Disney really wanted to make a movie on sister love, Kristoff is a completely unnecessary character. This makes Frozen really "two sisters and a guy" instead of two sisters (02:42). As Elsa needed Anna's help in both movies and men in both movies assumed Anna cannot do the job.

Is Frozen a Feminist Movie or a Sexist Movie?

This source is an article someone wrote. The article started off with reasons why people think Frozen is feminist then argue how they are invalid. Then the article talks about how Frozen is in fact sexist and gave several examples. For instance, Anna is still "saved by Kristoff" as she cannot get to "ice mountain by herself." I plan on using some of the examples the author pointed out in the article in my script.

'Princess culture:' Do movies like Frozen 2 reinforce gender stereotypes?

This source is a news article written by Laura Sciarpelletti from CBC News. This news article talks about how Frozen 2 still enforces gender stereotypes. They explore the term princess and what princesses do in Frozen. They interviewed several little girls around a local elementary school and asked them what a princess is. One of the girls even simply answered with "Elsa" with an even simpler reason, "'Because she's pretty.'" I plan on using specific examples like this in my script to enforce how Frozen reinforced gender stereotypes in our lives instead of removing it.
